Image test
Submitted by nickvu2 on Mon, 04/21/2008 - 11:07am.I am now able to insert photos into my blog! I'm pretty sure logged-in users can do so as well. However let it be known, the user interface for uploading an image is ugly and a little confusing. Hence, I see this as more of a temporary solution to add color to the blogs.
This is a photo from the Tate Modern in London. It was an exhibit on urbanism. The wooden models are graphic representations of population density in various major cities around the world. It was stunningly effective!

Spam
Submitted by nickvu2 on Fri, 04/18/2008 - 12:07pm.Seriously!? The site's already getting hit by spam. I should probably just shut the site down; it's a lost cause. NEVER...I will not cower in the face of adversity! But what I will do is get an account on Mollom . (They say their name comes from a Star Wars reference. Can anyone out there shed some light on this?) What Mollom does is evaluate the quality of each piece of content to see if it's human generated or the droppings of some foul web-crawling spam bot. It's basically a simple turing test . The idea is that you can actually lower security measures, facilitating anonymous users and increasing overall site activity. We'll see how it goes.
Educational blog?
Submitted by nickvu2 on Tue, 04/15/2008 - 11:26pm.My gosh, I think a few years were take from my life trying to get these taxes done. Blah =P
Anyway, the lovely and talented Kim George suggested that this blog may be a good resource for new developers. That's an interesting idea. One definitely could gain exposure to the language and processes of website construction. And maybe see some good non-examples as I flail about, trying to find my way through this. Never the less, I really like the idea of this site being useful even as it's being built.
As you can see below, I was messing around with the poll module. Sweet, 4 votes. I think 2 of them were mine. I think it could be a good way to get feedback and a taste of public sentiment.
Big shout out to Asdo, the first person to become a member of Wax Artistic!
Dalai Lama
Submitted by nickvu2 on Sun, 04/13/2008 - 12:43pm.Not much work got done on Friday. But I have a good excuse, I swear! I went to see the Dalai Lama; it was incredible! It was a discussion on the science of compassion with a focus on early childhood developement. He is the most genuine, unpretentious insightful person. To see him in person was both a treat and an honor. But that's not all, I'm seeing him again on Monday!
Back to the world on websites...I upgraded the Organic Groups module again. It seems that they've been releasing updates almost weekly. Someone must be working really hard. Changes can be found in the tab layout and rss feeds.
I've been playing around with Google Analytics too. It's so much fun, not to mention insanely useful. If you're running a website, this is a must have. I wonder if people could use it to track traffic on their MySpace profiles? Is anyone out there still serious about their MySpace? Don't get me wrong, I still use it, just not nearly as much as I used to.
I'm the greatest programmer of all time
Submitted by nickvu2 on Thu, 04/10/2008 - 11:45am.So I actually altered some code today. It may be the first time I've done that. I feel like a real-life programmer. And I was successfully able to get rid of a few error messages. This is just the beginning of my interactions with code. Customizing functionality and theming are not that far off.
The Organic Groups module was upgraded. The most visible difference is the new menus to the left when you're in a group. It should make creating content and subscribing to news easier. Hopefully the menu isn't getting too busy. What do you think?
And just as a note, pretty much all the content up on the site thus far (save this blog) is for test purposes. So there is not actually a Seattle Slam Poets group using the site...yet. If anyone is feeling inspired though, feel free to contribute: start a blog, post on the forums, even create a group. You can be my official alpha testers! I'll make t-shirts.
Google Analytics
Submitted by nickvu2 on Wed, 04/09/2008 - 12:20pm.Today I installed Google Analytics. This nifty tool will track site activity. The data will be a behavior analyst's dream! Well, I haven't actually used the software, but it sounds good =)
I also split the Group node. (nodes are pieces of content.) Now users have the possibility of creating 2 different types of groups: an Organization and an Interest Group. The idea that each will have different permissions geared toward their their separate needs and activities. Right now they're the same; their functionality has yet to be developed.
Organic groups
Submitted by nickvu2 on Tue, 04/08/2008 - 10:37am.Lately, I've been trying to set up organic groups, particularly trying to get group forums set up. There doesn't seem to be a lot of resources discussing how to do this, but I think I'm getting closer.
Speaking of resources, the Geeks and God podcast has been an invaluable one. It's geared towards churches but it's an amazing place to learn tech basics. There's also lots of Drupal talk (that's the software this site is being built with,) which I'm eating up. Yum!
